This
village was the site of Mahan during the Samhan Period, Pajisong during
the Paekche Dynasty, and the main street
of Nagan-gun during Koryo Dynasty, and it has been
designated as
Historical Site No 302,the first entire village in
Korea to be so designated. It is well preserved
;
the original Choson Dynasty stone walls are still in good
condition,
the Tonghon (office of magistrate), Kaeksa (guest
houses), Monument of Admiral Kyong-up Im stands
proudly for all to see, and the market place and traditional
houses with straw-thatched roofs invite visitors to
enter. During the Japanese invasion of 1397 (the sixth year
of the reign of King Taejong), General Pingil Kim
called
up civilian troops to defend the village by stacking
up mud
walls. In 1626, 300 years after the construction of the mud
walls, General Kyong-up Im, who was then magistrate
of
Nagan-gun, replaced the mud walls with stone walls, and
these
are the walls that can be seen standing today. |
